Smutketeers: Welcome to the Smutketeers from waaaaaay over there on the Emerald Isle! Are all your stories set in Ireland?
Rhiannon: It’s lovely to be here.
None of my stories have actually been set in Ireland as yet, but you never know when some really sexy sidhe warrior (or warriors) may turn up.
Smutketeers: Now you’re just teasing us! You’ve written in several different genres. What do you think the biggest difference is between erotic romance and the tamer stuff? How is your process different when you write in other genres?
Rhiannon: Writing is always about the story, about the characters and their lives. So in fact my process isn’t that much different. But with erotic stories I think you have to go much deeper into the emotions of the characters. They’re pushed further and further to the edge as the story progresses.
On thing I do tend to notice however is that I write directly to computer with the erotic stories whereas the others tend to need to go on paper first. Maybe my subconscious is worried about starting fires with the heat level?
Smutketeers: What’s the worst piece of advice anyone’s ever given you as a writer? (Don’t try this at home, people!)
Rhiannon: Writing advice is funny. Something that works perfectly for one person will be a disaster for others. But the worst was someone telling me to use lots of lovely descriptive words instead of “said”, like growled, purred, mumbled and use –ly words to make it extra effective. Um… yeah. Kthnxbai!
Smutketeers: What’s your favorite magical creature or paranormal being to write about? Which book or books have they ended up in?
Rhiannon: I love angels and demons. There’s a bit of them in all my books, to tell the truth, sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively. My heroes in Edge of Heaven are Micha, an angel in severe danger of falling and Sam, a demon who’s more than happy to help him. Rafael and Aidan, the heroes in With A Touch are entirely human, but Rafael is a powerful psychic and Aidan’s dreams of a woman just as powerful leads them to brave terrible dangers among their enemies to free Eva. That said, there’s something of the warrior angel about Aidan, and Rafael can be a bold and sexy devil indeed.
Smutketeers: Which of your stories was the most fun to write? (It’s because it has the dirtiest sex, isn’t it? You can tell us…it’ll be our little secret!)
Rhiannon: All my erotic romances have dirty sex! It’s so hard to choose!
With A Touch gave me the most trouble, mainly because it wasn’t ready to let me get to the end until I acknowledged that the two men were as interested in each other as they were in our heroine. That made it the most fun to have written, anyway. Edge of Heaven, which comes out this summer is a full length novel so the all the varied opportunities for wicked encounters is even more enjoyable. Micah and Sam are something special, and Lily has her hands full with them. Or maybe, as she can be stubborn when pressed, that’s the other way around.
Smutketeers: If you could switch lives with one of your characters, who would it be and why?
Rhiannon: Lily… no, Eva… no Lily… no Eva… Can I be both? Wait, I’m worn out just thinking about it. It comes back to my boys really. It always comes back to those boys. How to choose?
Oh, I forgot the short stories. In the Black Lace Anthology Seduction I have a story called All for One when a woman who’s buried herself in a cold, corporate world is reunited with her three male college friends – friends who always loved her, so much so they wouldn’t make her choose between them. Now they’re back in touch, as it were, they still aren’t going to make her choose – she ends up with all three. Maybe that’s who I’d pick! *wicked giggle*
Smutketeers: Who are your favorite erotic authors and why?
Rhiannon: This is kind of hard, as there are a few *ahem* Smutketeers on that list! Crystal’s Treasured alone is one of my keepers!
I wrote my first erotic stories for the British imprint Black Lace and met the wonderful Portia de Costa (whose books I had been reading for some time), Charlotte Stein, Madelynne Ennis and Justine Eliot – they’re wonderful writers and wonderful people.
I recently started reading Kate Pearce’s books – and all I can say is “oh my!”
Smutketeers: Which books make your pry-them-from-my-cold-dead-fingers keeper shelf?
Rhiannon: I’ve a number of Black Lace books I go back to time and again – Portia’s The Stranger and Gothic Blue and the vampire anthology Lust at First Bite (if I can mention an antho I’m in). The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by Cheryl Mildenhall was my first. They say you never forget your first!
Yep, I have a pretty large naughty shelf.
And that’s not counting my ebooks. I mentioned Treasured above. And all of Jennifer Leeland’s Command series. Can’t wait for the next ones.
Smutketeers: Your new release is a ménage a trois (and you know the Smutketeers love us some three-way action), and you have another threesome coming out later this year. So, tell us if they’re boy-on-boy-on-girl or boy-on-girl-on-boy? There’s no right answer here…as long as you bring on the smut, we’re happy!
Rhiannon: I think I must be a boy-on-girl-on boy-on boy girl… or something. Anything goes. I like the dynamic of a ménage. And the undercurrents of the developing relationship can be so intriguing. Aidan adores Eva and Rafael. They’re alike, both psychics, both strong individuals. He’s just a soldier, he thinks, there’s nothing special about him. So maybe he’s better off leaving them, letting them be together. But he’s wrong – they love him as much as each other. See what I mean? Things get complicated. But love, and lust, conquers all – from self-doubts to evil corporations.
