“Mr. Cartwright?”
Jack’s head jerked up from his pile of mail. Clare stood a few feet from him. Her voice was soft and breathy, like a wooden flute being played in a forest. He smelled her—he’d come to recognize her scent even when she’d already left the room. It had an undertone of green apples with a whiff of chlorine. By now he’d learned that she swam. The thought of Clare in a swimming pool was almost too much for him. He’d spent agonizing minutes wondering whether she wore a bikini or a one-piece. Imagining her in the locker room…
“Yes? Clare?”
Her name felt intrusive on his tongue, too intimate. Embarrassing. As if she’d guess his perverted thoughts from the way he said her name.
“Mr. Barnes told me you grew up in this area.” She spoke with that same faint Louisiana accent and very carefully, as if afraid to get a word wrong.
“Yes, I grew up in South Boston.” A different world, but she probably knew that.
“Can you recommend a good watchmaker?”’
“A what?” He stared at her mouth as that little smile curled one corner.
“I need my watch repaired.” She opened her hand to reveal an old pocket watch, its silver patina chipped. The chain spilled through her fingers like water. He wanted to lick them.
“That’s beautiful.”
“It belonged to my grandfather. It deserves proper care.”
He loved the way she spoke, so precisely, carefully selecting each word. He’d heard she was studying poetry. “I agree. I don’t know of any repair shops offhand, but I can ask around.”
“I’d appreciate that very much.” She gave him the friendliest smile she’d shared thus far, along with a graceful nod. She turned as if to go, and suddenly he couldn’t stand to see that happen.
“Where are your friends?”
“My friends? Oh, Rob and Luc?” The corner of her lip quivered ironically. Fascinated, he realized he could read her moods in that one tiny portion of her anatomy. “They’re pretending to try out for crew. But really they just wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I suppose…”
“Yes?”
“I suppose you think we’re always together.”
“Frequently, at any rate. Students are usually advised to branch out, to get to know as many other students as possible.”
“Well.” She considered, tilting her head carefully. “I don’t care much for other students.” Her clear gray gaze slid toward his, catching for an electrifying instant of significance. Then she was gone.
She didn’t care for other students. Did that mean she cared for non-students? Did that mean she only cared for her two friends?
Jack went over every word in that conversation a hundred times before their next encounter.
Inane Scrawlings – September 28
My instincts tell me J’s fucked men before and would do it again. Sex practically oozes out the man’s pores. Does he have any idea what he does to me? The first time I ever spoke to him, at the mailboxes, I ran back to my room to masturbate. Except I didn’t even make it to my room. This sounds insane, but I ran into the laundry room and locked the door. I sat on a washing machine with my legs spread open. I still had my pocket watch, the one I’d pretended was broken. I wrapped the chain around my hand and drove it down my pants like a madwoman. With the chain pressed against my cunt and the washing machine vibrating under me, I thought about J—his big, hulking shoulders—black shadow on his jaw. Even so, I got odd looks from the kid waiting outside the door when I finally opened it.

He took off his jacket and laid it on the floor. He looked at her as he sat on the floor, leaning against the wall opposite the windows. “Take off your jacket.”
“Why?”
“Because I said so.”
She snorted. “Hah.” But pleasure expanded inside him as she unwound her scarf from around her neck and removed her jacket, laying it on top of his on the floor. Beneath she wore a pair of low-rise jeans that hugged her hips and legs all the way down to the beige Ugg boots. On top, a black long-sleeved T-shirt clung to her full breasts.
“Come here,” he said.
She walked over and slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor beside him.
“It’s a nice view,” he said.
“Yes.” She stretched her long, jeans-clad legs out in front of her and crossed her booted ankles.
Logan had always thought Ugg boot were the Uggliest thing ever invented for women to wear on their feet. Give him a pair of pointy toed stiletto boots any day. But he found himself unaccountably charmed by her chunky fleece-lined boots.
He turned his head to look at her, and she too rolled her head against the wall. Their eyes met.
Lust slammed into him like a body check.
They looked at each other. Moments accumulated. Heat built.
He dropped his gaze to her mouth, so lush and soft looking. His gaze dropped lower still and observed her breasts rising and falling with her quick, shallow breaths. She was affected by him too. There was something there.
He would never move in on another dude’s girl, but she’d only dated the guy once and he’d eat a hockey puck if he was wrong about her being as attracted to him as he was to her. He leaned in closer, slowly. Her eyelids dropped, her lips parted and then he closed his own eyes as he brushed his lips over hers. Once. Twice. And then he opened his mouth on hers and kissed her deeper.
He lifted a hand and dragged his fingertips over the soft skin of her jaw, then cupped her face and held it while they kissed. And yeah, hell yeah, she kissed him back, opening for him, and when he slid his tongue into her sweet mouth, she made a soft little sound in her throat that encouraged him. Her tongue moved against his and his brain shorted out, heat sizzling over every nerve ending in his body.
“Don’t do this,” she murmured, shifting her mouth away from his. He kissed her cheek instead.
“Say it like you mean it,” he murmured back. She groaned and triumph flared inside him. With his thumb on her chin, he tilted her head back toward him and kissed her again, longer, deeper.

However, being a smart man, it didn’t take him long to figure out that the smuttier books made a statistical difference in the frequency and intensity of our sexual encounters, if you know what I mean. Now I have a smut allowance.

Hi ladies! Your books sound awesome! Loving the covers too! :) And love the top 10 list! Gonna have to try some of those. They sound fun! I love naughty & smutty books! Why? Oh, so many reasons! I love being absorbed into the story. I dont just read about the characters, i get to be apart of them. I get HEAs, cant live without those! I love the stories, the characters, the plot, how everyone and everything is engaging. Not only that, i get to use my imagination and explore, i live the characters. Not only that, its HOT! Im a shy person and being able to be ‘naughty’ and ‘smutty’ though the characters..ive tried everything at least once! lol My first smut book, i was hook, and couldnt get enough. Ive learned so much too! Let me tell ya, you ladies definitely give education classes threw your books! hehe Reading things i didnt know about and thinking ‘holy crap! people really do that?’ and ‘oh my! thats hot! cant wait to try that?’ and ‘whew! im rereading this scene!’. lol
