“How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes!” ~Maya Angelou
The Smutketeers would like to say Happy Memorial Day (weekend)! We deal with fictional heroes every day, and we would be lying if we said that no credit should go to the selfless men and women who have voluntarily offered their lives and their youth to ensure we can write what we want, say what we want, love who we want, and live in a world that is always striving to be better. To be free.
Whatever your core beliefs, on this one thing we can all agree-we know someone who knows a hero. One of my own geeky idols, Joseph Campbell, spent his life studying mythology, culture and the hero’s journey. He said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”
So for a moment this weekend, in between the family/friend gatherings, the bbq on the grill, the parades and the trips to the beach…think about them. The real heroes who don’t shift into werewolves or have telepathic powers (we think). The human men AND women who have that extra something inside them that makes them sign up and put themselves in harm’s way to ensure the rest of us have the right to choose. Those long past and those still waiting to come home for that welcoming kiss. Think about them and thank them.
Have fun Smutkedettes! Happy Memorial Day!
And if you want to share who you think about and thank this weekend on this post…You can have a chance to win a Got Your 6 T-shirt! Winner will be announced on Tuesday!

by chey May 26th, 2012 at 7:36 pmI have had the good fortune to interact with several of our military men and women who are serving and I appreciate all of these heroes who are unselfishly serving their country at great personal sacrifice and I am grateful to their families as well.
by ELF May 26th, 2012 at 10:31 pmI love Memorial Day (Weekend)! As a family we try to Thank our Military Men and Women whenever we see them. One of the traditions we have is to plant flags at our local cemetary on the gravesites of those who have served. My 2 young sons really love it. We also walk in the Memorial Day parade with the Boy Scouts. Our final tradition is to go to Jefferson Barrack Cemetary and have a beer and whiskey with our grandpas who served in WWII. I can see my boys already have that honor that comes with knowing who to thank.

Today as I watched the small parade in my neighborhood, I think of those who served like my uncles and those that are in the military today. My uncle’s two grandsons are signing up for the Navy after high school. I am both honored and thankful that there are young men and women who will put themselves in harms way to protect this country and what it stands for. Freedom is a choice we have in the great USA and it is days like this that we can remember it comes with a price. To all our service men and women; past, present and future, Thank you and Bless you!!
by Suzie May 27th, 2012 at 9:12 amI just want to say thank you to all who have fought to protect us and our freedoms. May those overseas come home safe and soon
