R.G. Alexander’s first book for Berkley Heat, POSSESS ME, is coming out on August 3rd, and we’re SO excited! This is a beautifully told story of love, lust and possession-figuratively and literally. Here’s a li’l peek:
In the Big Easy, there’s a legend women long for: a sexual voodoo spirit who can fulfill their darkest fantasies. And in these three steaming-hot novellas, he helps three New Orleans couples achieve the ultimate satisfaction…
In Release Me, Allegra heads down to New Orleans to heal her wounds, but she never expects to lose her heart to such a quiet, troubled man as Rousseau. She’s even less prepared for the scorching, sexual spirit within him-and what he can do to her…
In Reclaim Me, Ben has loved Michelle as long as he can remember. But his beautiful artist has a way of running away from life-and what the pair could be. Leave it to the infamous spirit to help Ben prove to Michelle where she belongs: in his embrace…
In Redeem Me, it’s All Saints’ Day, the one day the voodoo spirit can walk the world in the flesh. When he bumps into Bethany, she might just be the reincarnation of a girl he once loved. Passion ignites, but can the couple overcome past mistakes and have a real chance at love?
To celebrate the release of POSSESS ME we’re having a countdown party, and some of our smutty author friends have been happy to participate! I asked them this question: Eden: I me want to know about that experience of being ‘possessed’. I don’t mean by a ghost, but rather that feeling you get when a man completely inhabits your every waking moment, you can’t stop thinking about him. Obsession. Raging desire. You know what I mean…
Here are the answers from some of the leading authors in erotic romance, and our dear friends:
“I can’t say I’m the sort of person who gets obsessed about anything apart from maybe my extreme devotion as a teenage to various pop/TV stars. But I love it when my characters become obsessed with their perfect match. There’s nothing like writing about that intense sexual need to possess someone entirely, to lick their skin, to be naked with them 24/7, to just want to be with them and breathe them in. As romance writers we get to write about that first taste of love, which is very often obsessive and makes for great sexy scenes.
My hero, Christopher Ellis in ‘Kiss of the Rose’ ends up becoming obsessed with the heroine, (in a good hot sexy way) and I loved watching him succumb to that most instinctive of states, and bearing in mind his history, his instincts are definitely unusual. ‘wink’”
Eden: I love that you address taste and scent-so much a part of that intense chemistry!
* * *
“The first time I was truly possessed was when I watched Thundercats. My family never owned cable, so I had limited access to “cool” stuff. I found Lion-O in his strappy onesy incredibly kinky. He had an innocence and a stupidity about his flowing mane most of the time, but when the chips were down, he could bulk up, get serious, and power into a man with a giant-ass sword. I was fifteen. And I was captivated by the whole world of isolation, natural paradise, psychic powers and technology. Now I’m all grown up and am writing kinky scifi-fantasy shapeshifters. They say you always remember your first. “
Eden: This reminds me of being a kid-maybe five years old-and I was in love with Kimba the White Lion (does anyone remember that cartoon?). Yes, he was a lion. And he was animated. Hey-I was five! But I totally get it, Mima. Although no lion shapeshifters for me…but never say never.

“Being possessed by a love is a full body experience. It’s like the object of your love permeates your soul, encompasses every heartbeat, gets into every cell and hums. Your bones tremble in tune with their voice. You taste them on the air, hear them in the wind. Being possessed by love is enthralling and makes you feel alive.”
~Inez Kelley, author of SALOME AT SUNRISE
Eden: I love how sensual your interpretation is. It’s like that for me, too-it can really take over the senses.
* * *
“Obsessive love makes you do things that you tell yourself you will never do. Things like driving past his house just to see if he’s home yet or sitting by the phone from 5 o’clock on because he said he’d call you “tonight”. Things like calling in sick to work because he decided he wants to go on an impromptu trip mid-week and you can’t stand to not be with him. You might even help him write his master’s thesis, just to help him get it done sooner. You are not a morning person, but you’ll let him in at 6am to spend some time with him before work. And if you could kiss him forever, you know it would be paradise. You forgive him for stuff you would tell your friend to dump her guy over. Things like that phone call to a “friend” on your hotel bill when checking out after your romantic getaway that wasn’t great or perhaps figuring out he’s actually in town on Valentine’s Day when he says he’s away and realising he’s with someone that’s not you. You believe him when he tells you that no one will love you like he loves you. And you believe the stories he tells you because he is your drug of choice. He is what wakes you up and makes you feel alive. His possession and this obsession will send you from the heights of ecstasy to the depths of Hell. And even after you get out, even after you are years away, your heart still picks up a pace when you think of him.”
Eden: Aw-yours is so sad. But true, too. *sigh* There can definitely be a dark side.
* * *
“Describing what it feels like to be possessed may be hard to describe. It’s such an elemental feeling, so consuming, I shiver to dive into the depths of it. Yet I will… The first time I saw my husband…
I saw him standing there with his booted feet crossed at the ankle. He wore tight jeans with a few rips, a t-shirt and a black leather vest, topped with a bad boy attitude that immediately commanded my attention. It begins with the shiver of awareness, that whisper dancing up my skin, making the small hairs stand at attention. My stomach clenches as heat radiates out from below my waist, sending slow pulses through my body, growing stronger as it travels outward.
My nipples pop like small pink diamonds, reacting to his raw sensuality and his nearness. My breath puffs out in short bursts as warmth seeps into every fiber of my body.
He turns to look at me and one corner of his mouth kicks up. I swallow the lump in my throat and step toward him, ready and willing, to be his.”
Eden: Oh, I love this! And I know that sensation, where your breath catches and you go hot all over…and after that moment, you can never stop thinking about him…

The wonderful and wickedly sassy Jax Cassidy is with us today, and we’re so excited to have her back! Jax is a dear friend, an awesome author, and a creative evil genius. Accomplished not only as a writer, but as a graphic designer, and one of the two great minds behind Romance Divas, an award-winning writer’s resource website and discussion forum with over 3,700 members, Jax never stops! Today’s interview theme is ‘Stayin’ Alive’, so let’s have a chat with this powerhouse to see how she’s surviving the challenges of today’s publishing industry!
Smutketeers: Jax, the Smutketeers tend to be nosy (one of our more charming features), so tell us something people might be surprised to know about you. And make it scandalous!
Jax: Scandalous, huh? I normally don’t kiss and tell but I’ve been known to strip down to my au naturale state in the name of comic book modeling. Let’s just say it was a very titillating experience. …
Smutketeers: You’ve been doing some interesting things with Smashwords. Tell us about this new publishing phenomenon, and about your Smashwords books.
Jax: About a year ago, my good friend Eva Gale had her rights reverted back for a series of short stories from her ePub. She had mentioned a desire to expand her readership and shared information about Smashwords. Her friends had experimented with this online platform and had successful results so she tried it out. In retrospect, I wish I had taken more of an initiative because, after a year since she put up her free reads, her stories are one of the most downloaded stories on their website–ever! Even their formatting guidebook uses one of her short stories as an example. Then and there, I decided I needed to get my stories up ASAP. I figured that as an author I promote on as many online venues as possible so this is no different than a type of online marketing campaign. Based on Smashwords professionalism and business structure, it was a win-win.
What I love most about Smashwords is that I get to control whether I want to sell my own stories or offer them for free for readers. Why hide those old manuscripts under the bed when you can just edit, format, and upload to get people familiar with your writing style. I haven’t put up any of my paranormal stories but from the results of my own experimentation…after the first 3-4 weeks of having my free reads available, I had around 2,000 downloads and counting. The responses were amazing and so I decided to put up a short story, DEVIL’S HEART to sell. I love this story! It’s set in Ireland and involves a hunky bar owner and a sexy indie singer. It’s a contemporary erotic that has a splash of fairytale and I even designed the cover.
What I took away from this experiment is that free reads will get you maximum exposure and heavy downloads but don’t expect to have high sales. The stories I’ve noticed that has grabbed lots of interest are ones that reach both the male and female audiences. As I mentioned, this release was a promotional experiment for me. It certainly helped bring in additional visibility but my money’s still on pursuing the traditional NY publishing route.
Smutketeers: The publishing industry is changing, and small press and e-books are becoming more familiar to the reading public. How do you think this will affect authors? Readers?
Jax: Any kind of publishing exposure is good exposure…more people are willing to try out eBook authors because it’s much cheaper and they won’t feel bad if they don’t like what they’ve bought. A lot of instant bestsellers have emerged from ePubs and small press and the numbers of them doing very well owe it all to ePublishing. I think there’s a wider demographic that ePubs and small press are able to tap into. They’re also more willing to take chances and publish stories that traditional publishers won’t.
In any industry, there are reputable and scandalous ePublishers out there but an authors job is to do the research before submitting. Don’t be eager to sign. Read the fine print on the contracts. Plan your future and see which ePub will help you get to where you need to go. There are so many online resources and so many ePub authors out there who will share information.
I’m thankful to have my start in both ePub and small press. It’s given me a chance to learn about the submission process, edits, deadlines, and proposals. The experience will help you out immensely when you get those big contracts. By that time, I’ll be prepared and at my best professionally!
Smutketeers: We know you now have an agent-the same agent who represents all of the Smutketeers, the amazing Roberta Brown of the Brown Literary Agency! Tell us a little about your writing history and the trials and joys you’ve been through. How have your writing goals and your career changed over time?
Jax: I can’t praise Roberta enough! She is the most amazing individual and has a gentle soul. She has a way of making you feel like the most special person in the world and her support has given me a huge boost during this economy. Getting signed by her was a total accident. She had rejected three of my proposals in a three-year period and I decided I’d wait to send her something fabulous when the time was right. Well, a few weeks before Thanksgiving a year and a half ago, I had written a short story I wanted to submit to Spice Briefs. I begged her to read over it and give me her thoughts on my story because I knew she had sold plenty of Briefs to Harlequin. A few days after I sent her the email, she wrote back and asked me to set up a time to speak with her. Let’s just say for Thanksgiving I had signed with my first choice agent… Still can’t believe it!
Everything is supposed to be great when you have one of the best agents in the biz, right?
In my case, I can say that it was the happiest and toughest time for me. Unfortunately the economy was swirling down the crapper the week I signed and publishers weren’t buying because they were undergoing re-organization and downsizing. Lucky me. I was no longer in the slush pile but on a whole other stack of slush pile for new authors with agents. Yep, there is a hierarchy to everything. My waits were shorter with an agent but unless you wrote what fit their bill, the days of trying to sell the book of your heart is virtually on hold. I still didn’t allow all this frustration and negativity to bring me down, so I kept writing and staying busy.
Although I had a full plate with my boutique design company and Romance Divas, I managed to submit two short stories and four proposals. I am currently trying to finish two manuscripts and 3 more proposals. The deadlines never cease even when you’re awaiting your fate. I truly learned so much about resilience, spirituality, internal strength, and staying positive because those things will keep that fire lit within you. I’m a firm believer that hard work and a strong work ethic will get me that big freakin’ contract. Just wait and see…
Smutketeers: What are you currently working on?
Jax: I am finishing up a paranormal romance that involves the world of Death. It’s not a fallen angel story but it’s the coolest world I’ve ever built in my head and I hope I’ll be able to share it with everyone someday real soon…
I’m also going to pick back up on an Italian contemporary I started eons ago but never had a chance to finish. I’m only one chapter away from being able to polish and send to my agent. In addition, I’ll be able to work on a very cool young adult series wrapped around Asian mythology and the elements. I can’t wait to try my hand at reaching the younger audience…of course, under a different pen name.
Smutketeers: What are your favorite genres to read? To write?
Jax: I LOVE contemporaries but I don’t limit myself to just that genre. I enjoy historical, some paranormal and erotica books. Sad to say I don’t have many opportunities to read but when I do, I can go through a stack of books in a day or two.
I never say ‘never’. I think anyone who writes historicals are brilliant. I have entertained the thought but my first love is contemporaries. Paranormals are fun to delve into when I’m in that dark headspace and need the release. Perhaps someday I’ll write a historical set in Vietnam. I think most people might not find it the most romantic or exotic country because predominantly Chinese and Japanese stories have always been at the forefront..but I’m proud of my heritage and I hope someday I can talk about all those amazing figures in history that I learned about and bring them to life!
Smutketeers: Do you believe in love at first sight, or do you think it’s lust at first sight that can turn into something more?
Jax: I’m a firm believer in soul mates and destiny. I have totally fallen in love at first sight (even had lust at first sight) but it’s even more amazing when the emotional, physical, and mental is solidified through a strong relationship. That’s when the passion never wavers and the other person is the very air you need to breathe and keep you alive. I’ve found my Mr. Right so I can tell you I have firsthand experience on this topic.
Smutketeers: What else do you want to tell our Smutkedettes and others reading the blog today?
Jax: I live by the philosophy of helping others, staying true to yourself, and indulging in whatever it is that will make you feel alive. I wish I had more free time to focus on charities, fighting against human trafficking, feeding and helping the less fortunate…but every chance I get, I try to do one act of kindness. I think that in this time and age, a lot of people have forgotten about just being nice. It doesn’t take a lot of effort. Open doors, smile, help someone whose hands are full, thank someone…I guarantee you’ll feel good about yourself if you try it.
I always sign my books with “Live with Purpose, Love with Passion” and it’s something I feel strongly about. Writing has helped me through so many personal hurdles, health issues, and so much more that’s happened in my life. It’s given me an outlet and it’s a gift that I never take it for granted. I hope that when someone reads one of my stories, they’re able to escape, laugh, cry, or feel anything at all…in knowing that, I have done my job as a writer. Thanks for inviting me into your livingroom!

Once upon a time, two young lovers vowed to reunite…
Celestial Seductions, Book 2
After a bitter divorce, Isabel Asher returns to Isla de Margarita to find the only man she’s ever truly loved. Twelve years ago, on her eighteenth birthday, they made a pact to meet…if they both were free. Now she waits, wondering if Rafael Cruz will be her every fantasy come to life…or just a foolish dream.
Rafael never forgot their summer of love all those years ago. Since then, no other woman has measured up to the memory of Isabel in his arms. Their chemistry is still stunning, the sex is sizzling. The power of their memories is overwhelming. Yet it’s too soon to tell if she wants to be with him as much as he wants her.
As her time on the island grows short, their sensual play heats up, and includes a night with Rafael’s best friend. But they must decide if their passionate reunion is simply a celebration of the past…or a new beginning for lasting love.
Warning: Hot sex on the beach, hot sex in bed, two gorgeous Latin lovers, a little anal action, a little vibrator action, and a lot of orgasms!
Here’s a sneak peek-nothing too dirty…just a little tease…
* * *
Silently, he moved away from her. Taking her hand, he led her across the courtyard, through a narrow, tiled walkway, to a private bungalow at one end of the hotel. Her pulse raced, her heart hammered a sensual cadence in her chest, in her sex, as she realized what was about to happen. He would finally be naked with her, touching her, just as he had done in twelve long years of fantasies.
She knew already it would be a hundred times better now, as adults, than that one lovely, sweet experience had been. It would be better than anything she had ever imagined.
He opened the heavy wood door and pulled her into the cool interior of his home. One small lamp cast a golden light over the tiled floors, the heavy beamed ceiling, the potted palms set here and there. Through a wall of windows overlooking the beach she could hear the muted roar of moon-tipped surf. But she wanted to concentrate only on him. She would explore this lovely place later.
He stood with her a moment in the entry hall, watching her, a small smile on his lush mouth. His gaze was dark on hers.
“You’re more beautiful than ever, Isabella.”
His words warmed her, but she didn’t want to talk anymore. As though he could read her thoughts, he moved in and kissed her again, his hands going to her cheeks, then sliding down to caress her shoulders, her arms. His touch was pure heat, lighting up her skin. Electric, as though every nerve was acutely attuned to his touch.
When he pushed his tongue into her mouth, just slipping it between her silken lips, opening her up, she went warm and loose all over. The warmth quickly turned to volcanic heat when his hands moved in to cover her breasts, the weight of them filling his palms. She groaned into his mouth, pushed her body closer, her hardening nipples pressing into his hands.
God, she needed to be naked with him, needed to feel his touch on her bare flesh.
“Rafael, please…I can hardly stand it.”
“I’ll give you whatever you need, Isabella. I’ll give you everything. But it’s been so long, and I want to get to know your body again.”
That name. Isabella. No one else had ever called her that, only him. His voice, and that lovely rolling accent…hearing that name on his lips sent a long, lovely shiver through her: her breasts, her sex. Her heart.
Don’t expect too much. Just be in the moment.
The moment was too lovely to ignore. He moved his hands away from her aching breasts and smoothed them over her waist, her hips, tracing the outline of her body.
“Yes, it’s still you, but more lovely curves.” He sounded almost reverent as he whispered against her mouth. “More a woman.”
His hands slid downward, his fingers moving beneath the hem of her cotton dress and roving up her thighs. The moment his hands touched her naked skin her sex went wet, drenched in heated desire.
Touch me.
“Your skin is like silk, just as it used to be.” His voice was a husky whisper, turning her on every bit as much as his hands on her body.
Then he was kissing his way down her neck, in the valley between her breasts, over her stomach through the cotton of her dress, until he was on his knees before her, his cheek against her belly. Her hands went into his hair, and it was soft beneath her fingers. She was shivering, the anticipation sharp, lovely.
His hands were on her thighs, gently kneading the skin. Then he raised the hem of her dress higher, revealing the white lace panties she wore. She wanted to keen her need to him, to beg him. But she remained silent, the waiting an exquisite kind of agony.
“There’s so much heat coming off you, querida, it drives me crazy. The scent of your desire…mi Dios…do you know what you do to me?”
All she could do was groan as he bent his head and kissed her bare stomach, just above the white lace that was so unbearably in the way.
He kept kissing her, his mouth leaving a trail of molten heat across her belly. Her hips moved forward of their own accord, pressing into the velvet warmth of his lips. Her body was on fire, the need a scorching heat that centered in her sex and spread outward, breathtaking in its intensity.
“Yes,” he said quietly between achingly soft kisses, “I think you need me, as I’ve needed you, for too long.”
His voice, his mouth on her flesh, was driving her crazy. She wanted her clothes off. She wanted that soft mouth on her breasts, on her sex, swollen and burning with need. Why wouldn’t he undress her?
When he looped a finger around the edge of her panties and pulled them in a slow, sensual sweep down over her thighs, her calves, taking his time, her legs began to shake.
On his knees, he pushed her until she felt the wall behind her, warm from the heat of the day, steadying her. Then he pushed her dress up, the fabric bunching around her waist. He was so close to her she could feel his breath on the curls between her thighs, and her pussy clenched in anticipation. She closed her eyes, let her head fall back against the wall and waited.
He didn’t move, yet she could sense the change in his breathing as he knelt before her, his face inches from her sex.
“Isabella. Move your legs apart for me. I need to see you. All of you.”
God, that voice again. She did as he asked instantly. And she felt, for the first time, the power in his command. That some part of her was giving herself over to him on every level. That she would do—willingly—whatever he asked of her.
“Ah, yes.” He brushed his fingertips over her curls, so that she could almost feel his touch, but not quite. Torture. She’d never been so wet in her life. “So beautiful. I want to taste you, querida, and I will. But later.”
“Rafael, you can’t do this to me…”
Oh God, was he really going to make her wait?
“Patience, mi cariño. I’ve waited too long to rush this.”
“You’re teasing me.”
“Perhaps I am.” He smiled up at her, that lovely smile that felt so familiar to her.
Yes, they’d waited too long. But maybe it had been necessary, to bring them together again with a little life experience under their belts. But she was too dizzy with need to think about it. Now, all she needed was him.
“Touch me, Rafael, before I lose my mind.”

To celebrate my release day, I’m having a little contest. Post here today and tell me where you pimped the release of SPRING EQUINOX-it can be your blog, Facebook, Twitter, anywhere-and you’ll be eligible to win a copy of any book in my Samhain backlist! Choose from: WINTER SOLSTICE, Celestial Seductions Series, THE SEEKING KISS, Book One in my Midnight Playground Series, or TEMPT ME TWICE, my hot contemporary menage.
I’ll choose a winner on Sunday night, and announce the winner here on Monday, so be sure to enter, and to check back to see if you’ve won!
Lots more fun stuff coming up at Smutketeers soon, including info on the launch of our Wasteland Series-great prizes, our appearance at the Romantic Times Convention, including a very special contest for one lucky person at the convention, and more! And stay tuned for some very big news-the unveiling of a fifth Smutketeer later this year! All for Smut, and Smut for All!
You know, now that I think about it, the Smutly Ones have had a passel of good news lately and we’ve neglected to mention it here.
I have the least cool of the cool news, so I’ll go first (not to say my news isn’t super duper cool, because it totally is!) and let you know I finalled in three contests this year (and I only entered four, so those are some sweet odds).
First, my filthy pirate time travel, Treasured, finalled in the Paranormal/Time Travel category of the Passionate Plume contest.
Even more awesomely, Carnal Desires finalled in the Erotic category of the Prism contest.
THEN! And here comes the steamroller of kick ass news, R.G. signed on with the Brown Literary Agency and sold to Berkley Heat. Because, you know, getting an awesome agent just isn’t enough for a Smutketeer. We go big or go home. Just ask our man toys. *g*
If that wasn’t cool enough, in the last few months, Eden has sold to Harlequin Spice and Berkley Heat (and took on a new pen name for that, Eve Berlin. Hot name, no? I love it!)
So there we are, rolling smuttily along in our attempt to provide you with more filth to read in bed at night.
I’m over at author Beth Kery’s blog today, talking about my latest books, A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN and TEMPT ME TWICE! And I’m giving away some goodies to two lucky winners! Come on by and visit!
My latest release, TEMPT ME TWICE, is my very first hot menage story, and my first story from Samhain, and it’s out today!
One hot man is good. Two’s double the fun…until your heart gets involved.
Jessie has been in love with her bisexual best friend, Paul, since their college days. He’s never made a move on her, though, and at this point she values his friendship too much to risk revealing her feelings. Especially since now he has a new male lover and seems so happy.
Paul and Noah have only Jessie’s rest and relaxation in mind when they invite her along on a camping trip to Lake Tahoe. She’s been pretty stressed out preparing to show her art at a major New York gallery. A weekend getaway will do her a world of good—and they won’t take no for an answer.
Jesse thought she’d be nothing more than a third wheel on this trip. But Noah is as sweet and hot as Paul, and their first night turns into a heated tangle of bodies in the dark tent by the lake.
It’s an erotic, intense experience that must come to an end. And when it does, will she still have her best friend?
Warning: Explicit and unusual sex in nearly every possible combination: boy on girl, boy on boy, boys on girl, with a little anal action and some spanking thrown in just to keep things interesting!
* * *
Want a little peek inside? Okay, but only for you…
* * *
Somehow, an hour later, she was in Paul’s black Jeep Cherokee, roaring up Highway 80 on the way to Lake Tahoe. Music blared from the CD player, the windows were down to let the fresh summer air in and she was more relaxed than she’d been in months.
“So,” Noah started, “tell me how you two met.”
“I picked her up in a sex ed class,” Paul said, winking at her over his shoulder.
“Hah. Hardly. I was his English tutor.”
“Yeah, but my version is so much sexier.”
Why did he have to say something like that? When had things between them ever been sexy, other than in her vivid imagination?
“You’ve known each other a long time then,” Noah said.
“We’ve been friends for ten years.” Paul turned again, flashed her a quick smile, and her insides melted as always.
“Why just friends? Or has something more ever happened between you two?”
“No, nothing,” Paul was quick to answer, then they were both silent.
Noah looked from Jessie to Paul. “Sorry. Not my business. I shouldn’t have asked.”
“It’s okay,” Jessie told him. “It’s a reasonable enough question.”
One she’d never been able to answer.
“What about you two? You met when Paul went to Quebec to pick up that T-bird, right?”
Noah nodded, smiled, a brilliant flash of strong white teeth.
Beautiful man.
“Yeah. He came into the bar where I was having a drink with an old friend. I’m really not usually the bar type. But Paul walked in, the hot American import. I liked him right away. I still do.”
He reached out, stroked a hand over Paul’s T-shirt-clad shoulder, and a rush of envy went through her. If only she could touch Paul so casually, express her desire for him so openly.
If only Noah would touch her like that.
Jesus. She really was a mess. She didn’t even know who she wanted. And nothing was going to happen anyway. She may as well get over it.
But she was wet, aching, as much as she’d been in the shower.
They reached their campground on the edge of Lake Tahoe in another four hours, parked and got out of the car. The sun was lowering in the sky, casting darkening shadows over the crisp blue, touching the water in the lake with silver. Fir trees surrounded the lake, which sat like an enormous blue bowl, cradled by the surrounding mountains.
Jessie raised her arms over her head and stretched her back, breathing in the crisp, clean air. So gorgeous here. She was glad she’d come, despite her uncontrolled surges of lust. Paul came around the side of the car and slid an arm around her shoulders.
“Can I tempt you to get some food ready while we put the tent up?”
He could tempt her into doing almost anything, if only he knew it.
“Sure. I saw the ice chest in the back. I’ll take care of it.”
They spent some time getting the campsite together. The sun dove into the horizon in a blaze of summer sky glory. Shades of pink, amber and gold cast long shadows against the trees, touching the boughs with color, before sinking, leaving them in darkness other than the light from the fire they’d built and the two Coleman lanterns, the faint glow from the other campsites.
Dinner was simple, pan-fried steak and potatoes wrapped in foil and baked in the fire, a bottle of wine followed by another. Conversation was easy. Noah was easy to be with, warm, friendly, open. He and Paul sat side by side, laughing, touching, yet somehow still making Jessie feel included.
She’d had too much wine, but it didn’t seem to matter. Paul and Noah would take care of her, she knew. She could let go, for the first time in far too long.
Finally it was time to settle in for the night. Paul helped her to her feet.
“Whoa, Jess. Hang on.”
“I’m okay. Just have a nice little buzz going.”
“Maybe more than a little.” He grinned at her.
“Maybe.” She grinned back, her body going warm all over as he looped an arm around her waist.
They moved to the tent, and Noah held the flap back for them. It was a large tent, almost tall enough for Paul to stand up straight in. Noah was already spreading out their sleeping bags, Paul’s in the middle. Jessie sat on hers to take her shoes off.
Paul yawned, stretched.
“Anyone else tired?”
“A little sleepy from the wine,” Jessie said.
“Me too.” Noah pulled his shirt over his head, revealing tight abs and a wide chest. She could make out his muscle tone even in the dim light of the single lantern they’d taken into the tent with them.
Paul stripped his shirt off too. She’d seen him without a shirt before, and it was something she never got over. The lean lines of his body, his smooth skin, his nipples dark, surrounded by a sprinkling of black hair. She wanted to put her mouth there, to suck…
Stop it. Time to sleep.
The men stripped down to their boxer-briefs, and she could see they were both hard, aroused. She squeezed her thighs tightly, her sex burning with need.
Paul glanced at her. “You’re not sleeping in your clothes, are you, Jess? It’s too hot.”
“Um…I guess not.”
She shrugged, wiggled out of her jeans, leaving her in her tank top and her underwear. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of her slim body. But they were all nearly naked together, and as Paul lay on the sleeping bag next to hers, she could swear she felt the heat from his big body. His scent, warm on the night air. And more faintly, Noah’s scent, fresh and all male.
How was she ever going to get to sleep?

But Valentine has a secret. Always in control, she’s never experienced true pleasure outside of her work. It happens one night at the opera. Seated next to her in the dark is a stranger. As the music swells, so does the sexual tension. Gorgeous, sophisticated Joshua Spencer invites her for a drink, and soon she’s fantasizing about taking him home. When they finally come together in a night of the wildest lovemaking Valentine has ever known, she’s hooked. But suddenly Valentine is questioning everything. Joshua has no idea what she does for a living. Can she risk everything—including her hard-earned freedom and one final, shattering secret—for one man? And would he still want her if he knew the truth?
I learned about something called suspension of disbelief a number of years ago in one of my English Lit classes. This is when a writer must make their reader suspend their disbelief in the unusual long enough to be drawn in and believe in the world the writer has created.
It’s something like that with my line of work. Our clients must suspend their disbelief long enough to believe the girl likes it. My particular ‘talent’, if you want to call it that-my particular perversion, really-is that they don’t have to do that with me. The truth is, I love it.
This is my dirty little secret. Because this is supposed to be taboo among the professionals of my world. Call girls. Prostitutes. Hookers. It doesn’t matter what you call us. The fact is, I get paid for sex. And it’s the only kind of sex I can get off on.
Who knew a nice Jewish girl from the Valley could end up here? Well, half Jewish, anyway, my father being a lapsed Catholic. And maybe I’ve never been all that nice.
I grew up in Van Nuys. Van Nuys is possibly the most generic, boring place on earth. Middle class, cardboard box houses that all look the same, block after block. The entire area looks as though a dull film has settled over it.
My family was at the lower end of the middle class. Not that we were poor. We always had a roof over our heads, food on the table. My father, a construction foreman, worked a lot, but he spent his money anywhere but at home. My mother never did much other than drink. Strange that he wasn’t the drinker. Jews don’t tend to be drinkers. Not that it ever stopped my mother. But my life has been a combination of the utterly dull and the most perverse, in every way, on every level. Classic hard life story, I know, but that’s my life. Or it was. Too fucking bad.
I make a lot of money. Enough to keep me very comfortable in my Hollywood Hills home. Enough to pay for the expensive clothes I buy at Barney’s and Kitson, my weekly facials and massage at the spa. Enough to pay for the breezy little Mercedes I drive, if it hadn’t been a gift from a happy client. This is why I do it.
Actually, that’s a lie. It’s what I tell myself when I’m not in the mood for the kind of deep, soul-searching honesty that keeps me up at night. How I justify it in the most basic, simple terms.
The truth, or part of it, anyway, is that I began in this business because I needed to distance myself from what I was before. From that lower middle class Jewish girl from the Valley whose mother was always passed out on the couch, surrounded by a sticky puddle of whatever she was drinking on the floor, the overflowing ashtrays. Repulsive. I won’t even allow my clients to smoke around me. If they don’t like it, they can find another girl. I’m at a point in my career where I can make a few demands of my own, and I do.
I am someone else entirely now.
